Chinese Dub, a sensational new commission by the Liverpool Culture Company for European Capital of Culture, comes to the Carling Academy in July for its world premiere.
Internationally-acclaimed musician Jah Wobble - who has worked with music icons such as Bjork, Brian Eno and Massive Attack - joins forces with the Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra (PCYO) for the dynamic show.
Combining Jah Wobble’s trademark dub with Chinese melodies and instrumentation, the 22-piece outfit features singers from Tibet and Yunnan Province, dancers from Hangzhou, Sichuan Opera Mask Changers, and an Anglo-Chinese dub band made up of bass, drums, guzheng, yangchin, bamboo flute, and gourd pipe.
It aims to raise awareness of Liverpool's Chinese community in the city, celebrate cultural diversity and promote Chinese music to a wider audience. Liverpool was the first place in Europe with a Chinese immigrant population and the PCYO, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2008, is the oldest - and largest - Chinese youth orchestra in Europe.
Chinese Dub comes to the Carling Academy on 5 July 2008. For more information, please call 0151 707 3200, or log-on to www.liverpool-academy.co.uk
