This West-facing coastline runs between the Liverpool Docks and the Ribble Estuary, and is of huge importance environmentally as well as being a favourite tourist destination.
Southport is loved by all who tread its beach and Victorian promenade, sample its restaurants and shops or take in the scents and beauty of the famous flower show. Golf lovers will find seven championship courses in its surrounding area including Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham St Annes. There's much more on www.seftonsnaturalcoast.com, and it's a short drive (by car, if not no. 1 wood) from the centre of Liverpool!
Grey squirrels have largely taken over the UK's woodlands after their introduction from across the Atlantic, but it is their red cousins who are native to the country. They survive in small pockets, one of which is in the pine forest of Formby, and a major conservation effort is under way to keep it so. And visitors are most welcome.
In 2005 Crosby's population grew by 100 people, albeit the cast-iron type, when Antony Gormley's Another Place sculptures embedded their feet in the beach. Like all good artworks they proved immediately controversial, but their enduring popularity meant that their stay changed from temporary to permanent, thanks to a persuasive campaign.
Long, wide, beaches, immaculate greens, nature, entertainment and art all line up to make the Sefton Coast the ideal location for a day spent outside Liverpool's buzzing centre. Visit www.seftoncoast.org.uk for more information.
