Between the Rivers Dee and Mersey and with the Irish Sea to the north, Wirral is a peninsula blessed with stunning natural splendour and a wild, unspoilt coastline. Protected coastland parks preserve some of the finest coastal scenery in Britain and winding country lanes criss-cross the verdant landscape.
With miles of footpaths, tracks and bridleways to explore, the Merseyside area has something for the most enthusiastic walkers, cyclists or horse riders, such as the west to east coast National Cycle Route (Trans-Pennine Trail) which starts in Southport.
The Merseyside countryside is also home to some of the most naturally challenging golf courses in the world, and played host to the Open Championship in 2006.
England's largest community forest, The Mersey Forest, covering some 420 square miles of Merseyside, provides numerous opportunities for the more active visitor.
And if you need any more proof of the unique variety on Merseyside, , ask yourself where you can find Britain's largest herd of African elephants; the answer is Knowsley Safari Park, of course! And Liverpool is also home to Europe's only National Wildflower Centre.
