The Mersey Partnership Annual Tourism Award Winner: Small Hotel of the Year 2006/07
Nestling in the heart of the beautiful Wirral peninsula, just 15 minutes yet a million miles away from vibrant Liverpool, Capital of Culture 2008, this magnificent hotel provides the finest luxury in the region, coupled with discreet yet friendly service from the resident owners and their team. Set in 250 acres of parkland, Hillbark is an oasis of tranquillity and understated elegance.
It is the perfect choice for business gathering and conferences, with a selection of meeting rooms and full facilities available. The nature of the building means that full flexibility is possible for any event, be it board meeting, product launch or conference; we also have available a luxury hard walled marquee which accommodates up to 800 theatre-style.
Owners Count and Countess Baker have painstakingly restored the Grade II-listed building to its original glory with lavish and luxurious enhancements. Nineteen superb bedrooms have been created, each sumptuously and individually furnished: the magnificent Haddon Hall Suite, Five Suites, seven Junior Suites and Classic Rooms.
Hillbark boasts gourmet fine dining in the Yellow Room restaurant with its treasured wine list (one of the largest in the North West) and more contemporary dining in the Hillbark Grill.
Rolls-Royce & Bentley motor cars are available to collect guests from airports and rail stations.
Hillbark's character appearance hides a fascinating history. The house was originally built in 1891 (on Bidston Hill in Birkenhead) for the soap manufacturer Robert William Hudson. Germany's Crown Prinz Wilhelm was so impressed with the house that in 1913 he built a copy for himself in Potsdam; Agreement at the end of World War 2 was signed there. Hillbark was sold in 1921 to Sir Ernest Royden and in 1928 was moved to its present site, brick by brick, finally being completed in 1931.
The house contains a variety of interesting features: the Great Hall has a 1527 Jacobean fireplace from Sir Walter Raleigh's house, a set of William Morris stained glass window and a pair of 13th century church screen doors; the library was originally in a stately home in Gloucestershire; and the Yellow Room Restaurant contains a magnificent 1795 Robert Adam fire surround.
